Do You Really Need a Workbench?

Question from a reader: do you really need a dedicated workbench or can you just use a folding table?

Short Answer

Traditional woodworking workbench

You can start on a folding table. I did. But you’ll outgrow it fast if you stick with woodworking.

Why a Real Bench Matters

Weight. A heavy bench doesn’t move when you’re planing or chiseling. That stability makes everything easier and safer.

Height. Folding tables are usually too low. Working hunched over gets painful and affects your precision.

Work-holding. Dog holes, vises, and holdfasts need a thick solid top. Can’t do that on particle board.

Budget Options

You don’t need a $2000 Roubo. A simple 2×4 and plywood bench works fine. I’ve seen great ones built for under $100.

The key is making it heavy, flat, and the right height for you. Everything else is optional.

Build one this weekend. You’ll wonder why you waited so long.
